In El Planeta, mother and daughter María and Leonor (played by the filmmaker and her mother, Ale Ulman) face impending eviction in post-financial-crisis Spain, grifting to maintain the stylish middle-class lifestyle they’re accustomed to. The women handle the possible repercussions of petty crimes with the dry humour and elegance that make up the film itself, hearkening back to the pre-code comedies of the 1930s and the American independents of the early 1990s.

El Planeta is written, produced and directed by highly lauded conceptual artist Amalia Ulman in her feature filmmaking debut. It was filmed in the city of Gijón, in the Asturias region of Spain where she grew up. Ulman’s comedic filmmaking is sharp and refined, and the warm, deeply rooted dynamic between her and Ale Ulman colour the film with a unique beauty that sticks with you long after viewing. —Rebecca Falvey
