HIFF Dailies • Day One
DAY ONE • OPENING NIGHT
It's finally here! The 14th annual Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival kicks off online tonight. While we wish we could meet in person, we're so excited to share this year's lineup of films and virtual gatherings with you, wherever you are.
Here's what's in store for HIFF 2020's opening night:
AVAILABLE IN NOVA SCOTIA
Our opening night screenings begin at 7 p.m. with L.A. Tea Time, presented by Telefilm Canada and the Talent Fund. L.A. Tea Time is an endlessly charming doc from Québecois director Sophie Bédard Marcotte that takes us along on her cross-continent mission to meet artist Miranda July. We're thrilled to present a virtual Q+A with Sophie following the screening.

Next up at 9 p.m. is Bait, the story of a Cornish fishing village's fight for survival as gentrification and Airbnb culture begin to invade, co-presented by Carbon Arc Cinema. Gloriously captured on hand-processed 16mm, Bait is a masterclass in analogue filmmaking that's not to be missed. After the film, we welcome BAFTA-winning director Mark Jenkin for a Q+A.

CFAT PRESENTS: THE UNSEEN
AN AUGMENTED REALITY PRESENTATION
AVAILABLE NOW
Over the summer of 2020, the Centre For Art Tapes teamed up with ARt@LARGE and the Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival to commission five artists to create original augmented reality projects in Halifax, exploring themes around seeing and exploring the unseen. Considering themes of connection, community, identity, and intimacy, the selected artists have created expansive works that invite viewers to step into alternate worlds, either on-site or from their homes in HRM.
The artists used the augmented reality app LARGE to create augmented-reality installations for this exhibition. The works are viewable through the LARGE app (available from the Apple app store or Google Play store). During HIFF, all works can be located and accessed within the LARGE app from within a 10-kilometre radius, encouraging the audience to visit the sites in Halifax and Dartmouth where our artists have planted their work, or view the works remotely from within HRM.
Featured artists: Carrie Allison, Israel Ekanem, Annik Gaudet, Merle Harley, and Wren Morris.
How it works:
Download the LARGE app (free for iOS and Android devices) and create your account.
Your screen acts as a portal—explore the space around you to engage with The Unseen exhibition's content.
Find the Pins (‘AR POPS’), a.k.a. pieces by our artists, on the map within a 10 km range in HRM. Click on each catch to unlock content.
Take a screenshot or video viewing one of the pieces, tag @centreforarttapes and @artatlarge on Instagram, and be entered to win a one-of-a-kind CFAT tote bag!
